Carriage Clocks

Since the early 19th century it has been fashionable to own a carriage clock. They were considered a neccessity of the wealthy. They were carried on train journeys in leather cases to ensyre they werent damaged.
One of Frances foremost clockmakers Abraham Louis Brequet made his pendule de voyage around 1810. It was a highly complex mechanism showing both calendar and temperature details. Top quality clocks were made over the next 100 years just for the wealthy. Clocks eventually went into mass production using cheaper materials thus reducing costs and making them within the price range of ordinary people.
